REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BERLIN - Nearly a dozen works of art that the Nazis regarded as a form of "slippage" and is believed to have been lost or destroyed, was found. Now, these works of art were being prepared for immediate display.
Statues of terracotta and bronze was discovered during the construction of a new subway in the city. Not only discover the sculptures, the workers also found 15 thousand historical objects which "condemned" by the Hitler regime because it contains sexual elements, themes or criticize the anti-nationalist ideology of the Nazis..The statues depict women in particular. Ten of the pieces will be on display Tuesday in Berlin Neues Museum. One, the male head of terracotta, are too fragile to display.
Construction workers found the art in the location of the office building that burned down in the summer of 1944, Museum Director, Matthias Wemhoff, told reporters Monday. The fire started from the roof, and set fire to the building from top to bottom.
"Each floor fell into the front and everything that can not be burned collected at the bottom of the basement, including the statues," he said. Judging from the placement and damage the work, they have been stored neatly before the fire, add Wemhoff.
Otto Freundlich, which extends one's cotta statue in 1925 was murdered in the concentration camp Lublin-Maidanek 1943. Naum Slutzky, a member of the Bauhaus school, fled to England in 1933, where she teaches art and lived until his death in 1965. His work Female Bust, was originally a shimmering bronze.
Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, said the findings of the sculptures is a "small miracle" for the young generation of Germans know a lot about "the dark city."
